SLJ

If I were principal:

If I were principal I would extend swimming times to whole blocks! Students could choose the timetable! They would also choose the focus for the term. If it was a lesson they could choose what they would study in that lesson for example maths and the might choose problem solving. I would make sure everyone was under control and they could choose to do sports or not.

J.K Rowling!!

We got to choose someone to do and I chose my hero J.K Rowling! Who's yours? What does it mean to be a hero? When she was writing her first book she had a hard life ):

Roald Dhal

These are the words I made up for my Roald Dahl project! What is your favourite book he writes?

Week 8 writing

Squealing with excitement, a child pointed to the feathery clouds down below. "Hey look Colin there's a cloud on a string!!!" he shouted over the roaring noise of the engine. Bobbing up and down the cloud on the string swayed and all of a sudden blew into the sky! His legs shaking, Colin stood up onto the wing of the plane. The metal vibrated underneath him. Then, once the cloud was above him he grabbed the string and took off with the cloud above everything. Humans below were to small to see and as Colin peacefully drifted off he murmured "This is the life..."

Did you spot that the cloud on a string was actually the sheep from the other story?

The sheep

Carelessly floating around, the sheep bobbed up and down like a puppet. Wispy clouds surrounded it like the type of cotton candy  you might find at a fair. The sun shone brightly like a ball of hot gas burning us slowly but carefully. Tying the sheep to the ground, a long narrow string waved smoothly through the air. A startling cry echoed throughout the forest as a girl came running out of it. Her eyes nearly popping out of her head, the girl cried " WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" to a boy standing directly under the sheep who was holding scissors dangerously close to the string. "He's full with helium! ha, ha, ha!" the boy shouted obviously teasing the poor child very badly...

I enjoyed writing this! If you have read some of my other writing you might recognize some of the characters!

If you read the next post you will notice something strange.

End Of Year Reflection

This is a video of my year! It was my first time using screencastify. I enjoyed using it!

My friend Saana was with me when I videoed it!
Have you ever used screencastify? Did you like it? Why?

Fantasy writing

Long, Long ago, too far ago for any normal human to remember is when this story is set. If you are keen to know if pixies ever roamed the earth...read on. If not stop reading now.

There was a rustle in the bushes, then the leaves parted as a small girl probably around the age of 8 scampered out of the overgrowth holding something in her palm that she had not entered with. If you were to look closer you would have seen a small blue gecko with huge longing eyes. Stroking the poor creature soothingly, the girl looked around frantically as if to check if anyone was with her. "Boo!" another child popped out from behind a tree. He was a bit older than the girl and because his hair was shorter than the girls it was visible to see that he had unusually large ears. Yes, you probably  haven't  figured it out yet and if you have you've got a amazing brain and you know that yes, they were both pixies. Jumping in fright, the young girl dropped the gecko which quickly darted back into the bush. Growling at her brother like a hungry animal might at his prey, she angrily yelled "You idiot! I love animals and only get a short while with them! You had to come ruin it!" and she stormed of leaving him standing dumbstruck. Hours later, she had returned and was trying to coach the poor thing out. It took a while but it was worth it to feel him in her palm once more...

This was fun to make! I used only shapes! See how many different shapes you can find and comment your answer! A top tip is to start with something easy like an animal or food.

Only rain down the drain

This is my pick-a-path! Hope you enjoy!!!

Writing the greatest storm

Sea spray splattered the shiny deck as frantic passengers screamed. “Papa!” I cried as the creaking boat tilted under the pressure of the crashing, monstrous waves.  All I could do was watch as the front half of the the boat plummeted into the depths of the sea never to be seen again. “Papa!” I cried once more. “Papa! Please please don’t die!” The next few miserable hours seemed to drag on forever. Slowly easing down as if deciding they were full the murderous  waves eased down and then the sea was calm again. Calm as if giving us all a happy moment to distract us. Still, depressing music played inside my head. My mother and Papa were gone and my stupid brain had to remind me about it. Of course, they had died. It was no use thinking up possible ways they hadn’t. Magic isn’t possible I reminded myself and even if it was It wouldn’t help me now. They were dead and I was now an orphan...

Green week poster!

This is my Green week poster! It was fun to make. What can you do to help the environment? Comment your answer!

Green week writing part two

Stumbling along carelessly, the dusty road crumbling beneath him, the man splashed a trickle of water up from beneath him. The town of Gorseville had not expected to have the flood so soon but the sea levels were rising and they should have seen it coming. You might be safe at home reading this or snuggling under your cozy, woolen blankets sipping at a frothy hot chocolate but believe me not every one is that lucky and the people of Gorseville are more than just unlucky. "But who is this mysterious man?" the people of Gorseville silently murmured like waves crashing up on a beach. Gruffly, the strange figure leaned down and after a few tries lifted up a satisfying amount of water in his cupped hands and unpredictably gulped it down and said the words ecaps, emit, levart. stringing around him a rope of golden glitter lit up the street and he was gone. No one knows where but if you solve the code of the words he said then you will know and you can decide what you would do then if you were the man...

Green week writing part 1

Plunging down into the bottomless blue, I let myself free of worry, work and stress. There were no problems fogging my brain. Enclosing around me, the blueness seemed to mutter in my ear secrets only the ocean would know. Off in another world, I floated calmly. Drifting away, I concentrated on nothing except happiness so I did not notice that a giant of the blue was lurking right below me. Brushing against the sole of my leather diving shoes, the monster swum carelessly along devouring every shrimp or fish that was unlucky enough to fall into its path. Shaking my head and coming back into focus I suddenly realized that danger was engulfing me. A humongous whale settled under me waiting to strike me because I was a bigger portion and to him a banquet. Becoming dizzy with fear, a thought occurred to me like a candle suddenly lighting in my head. The maximum of a whales meals is the size of a grapefruit. I wasn't going to become it's next meal. Snap! I took a few photos before clambering up onto the boat like Ivy creeping up a rickety fence. I was safe and I had some amazing footage of my adventure in the endless sea.

The Great Drain Game

1.
Today we had the great drain game! It was very interesting and factual. Our first activity was VR goggles and wetlands talk. The VR goggles showed a mission to save birds and then it was scuba diving. Then we had a wetland talk and did you know that the brown dirty water that went into our model came out normal! I learnt about the animals that live there and also how it works.

2.
We then did our second activity which was finding drains around the school! We have a lot of drains so maybe you could count! Me and my friend found 25 drains but others found 30 or more. We learnt that drains are important but also we don't want leaves in our drains because we need them for soil and we don't want soil in the sea!

3.
Our third and final activity was my personal favourite. We each got given a bottle of something and we put it next to we thought it should go. The options were: Toilet, bin, drain or sink. I had detergent which I put in the sink. We learnt about where they go after being put in. Things in your house go to a place called Water Waste Treatment Plant where they become good water. Things in the drain go to the ocean so be careful what you put in the drain!
Finally we chose a pledge. Mine was to bike, scooter or walk small distances instead of driving.
How can you help the environment?

Save the elephants story

No one warned me it would happen so soon, there were hints but we were too scared to say it out loud. Until today when everything changed… Elephants have been hunted for years now but my herd was only just attacked today. Slowly, I trudge on, dragging my feet along the dusty crumbling path. I feel like I’m dead. Like I’ve vanished from the earth. I just feel kind of empty… Like a part of me is gone and it is. Years ago my father was killed by creatures wanting his tusks. Defending his herd, he died bravely. Today unexpectedly, my mother had the same terrible thing happen to her. Deep down I know that my parents would have wanted me to continue without them and deep down inside I hope that my story will have a happily ever after...

Startled, a 10 year old girl woke up from a  dream. A horrible, hideous dream. Elephants were being killed, a baby was being tortured from it’s parent’s tragic death. Suddenly, a thought occurred to Nelly. Usually her dreams meant things like when she dreamed about a new teacher at school who let them do art all day and a few months later the same teacher arrived at her real school. But that was different, that was a good thing. “I’ll think about it later.” she thought and she stumbled, grumbling to the kitchen for breakfast. Strangely, as she was having cereal she heard a knock on the door. No one in her family was up yet and she pondered over what to do. “Come in!” she bravely cried out. The most peculiar looking figure approached her. “I am the problem solver or more often called Santa Claus” the figure boomed. “I cannot stop the death of elephants but I can help you…”

The future… In the future everything is blue.  Lapping around bodies, the water is silent. In fact, everything is silent… the problem hasn’t been fixed… dry, hard animal bones scatter the ocean. Humans have developed to this new blue world but some species were far too late. But, this future hasn’t happened yet so we can stop it from happening and save the elephants!!!!

My writing was based on the death of elephants I hope you liked it and are inspired to save the elephants. Comment what your favourite animal is!

Athletics day

Yesterday was athletics day ): I was sad because I don't like sports.

We chattered cheerfully on the walk there but after two minute at the actual place we had already had enough. It was a blazing hot day and there wasn't any shade except for a small blue gazebo with ice packs. My water bottle had frozen over night and my straw got stuck and I couldn't sip out of it. Sweat dribbled down our faces from the heat. I had to keep topping up layers and layers of sunscreen till my skin shined like crystals. Racers came back looking completely wasted. We all walked home boiling hot and wishing for teleportation.

Charts!

These are my charts! I have never made a pie chart before so this was exciting! Did someone ask you a question at morning tea one day? Have you ever made a chart? Comment your answers below!

P.s these are the numbers of the pie chart: 40 percent had 0. 30 percent had 1. 12 percent had 2. 6 percent had 3 and 4. 2 percent had 5,6 and 9.

Owairaka school who will win the rwc this year?

This is my bar graph. The question is: Who do Owairaka members think will win the Rugby world cup 2019?
This was my prediction before I had made the graph: I think NZ will will get the most votes. I think England will come second. Then Wales will come third. South Africa will come last.
My prediction was wrong. Actually NZ had the most votes: 71. South Africa had the second amount: 11. Then England was third with: 10 votes. Wales came last with: 4 votes.
I asked 96 people. Some teachers, some kids and some teacher aids. I can't wait to see if we were right! Who do you think will win  the Rugby?

Writing pictures

This is my writing! Mine is about a wizard, a girl who does not think she's a hero and a black crow. The heroic friends go on adventures to defeat the witch of wind but the real meaning of the story is climate change. I loved doing this and I am excited to do next weeks! What is your favourite slide?

Parvana chapters 1-2

This is my Parvana chapters 1-2 and I really enjoyed making the slides and diary entry. In the slide some answers to the questions are can't answer yet because whoever wrote the questions made a mistake. I hope you enjoy and now want to read Parvana.

Richie Patterson visit

Today we had an actual Olympian come to our school called Richie Patterson. He is a weight lifter and he said he makes mean Nachos.
He told us all about the Olympic values: Respect, Friendship and excellence.
He started weight lifting at age 14. He taught us about failure and how it's okay to make mistakes. Also we were surprised to learn that he made millions of mistakes in his career of weight lifting.
He had one a gold medal and was one of the only people in New Zealand to go to the Olympics three times.

Here are some pictures:
